What the Bible Has to Say about “Paying for Prophecies”

What does the Bible have to say about “paying for prophecies.” It might shock you! 

Introduction 
There has been a lot of discussion lately in Christian media from ministers who have a national platform concerning the concept of sowing a seed for a prophecy. These ministers and writers usually, more often than not, erroneously refer to the concept of sowing a seed for a prophetic word as “paying for a prophecy”. Generally these bloggers and writers give the impression that they have been assigned by God the spiritual authority to be prophetic police of the internet.
Sadly many of these bloggers and writers do not have the Apostolic or Prophetic authority assigned by God to even make these assertions.  Their argument against sowing a seed for a prophecy generally goes something like this: No matter how bad someone needs a prophetic word from the Lord, they should not receive a prophetic word from someone online by sowing a seed, but rather prophecies should be administered within the four walls of the church. Furthermore, if someone does receive a prophetic word online or via the internet, they definitely should not “pay” for it.  This is my first chapter of a new book I am writing, What the Bible Really has to Say about Paying for Prophecy. In this chapter I discuss the commonly misunderstood scripture in Matthew 10:8: Freely have you received; free you give.”
My first experience with sowing a seed for prophecy.
My first acclamation to sowing a seed for a prophecy happened about 10 years ago. I was talking to a friend who mentioned that she had received an anointed prophecy from a Bishop. When she told me who the Bishop was, I gasped! I was appalled. I had seen this Bishop on late night television and was familiar with him. He would ask people to sow a seed and in return the person who sowed the seed would receive a prophetic word. This concept of “paying for a prophecy” went against everything that I had been taught. “You can’t pay for a prophecy!” I exclaimed. And I was indignant about it. I stood on the scripture “Freely you have received. Freely you should give.” Later I will discuss how this is arguably one of the most misunderstood scriptures in the Bible as it relates to giving.
Ironically, a few days later I had fallen asleep with the television on. When I woke up, this Bishop that I had blasted my friend out for “paying” for a prophetic word was on TV. He promised that I could request a free prophetic word by calling his ministry. My curiosity got the best of me. I decided to request a prophetic word with the expectation that what I received would be bogus. Once-and-for-all I would prove that this guy was a phony.
After a week or so, I received a written prophetic word from the Bishop. The prophetic word that I received was very accurate – so accurate it was scary. The prophetic word mentioned how I was a writer and that God was opening up a career for me in the theater arts and film. This was all very true. Besides prophetic ministry, I am a playwright and screenplay writer. There was no way for him to know this. I was in the infant stage of my writing and did not have a website or anything out on the internet by which he could have “googled” me. Later, I sowed a seed to his ministry and received my first audio prophecy. I was extremely blessed by his ministry. The prophetic words that I received from him and his team of prophets gave me that courage to purse a career in entertainment. Since receiving his first prophecy I have produced 10 stage plays and 1 feature film that opens in stores soon. I would have never had the boldness to fully pursue this career had I not received this Bishop’s words.
You cannot “pay for a prophecy”. If God charged you for a prophetic word, you probably couldn’t afford it. 
My connection with these prophetic words from the Bishop put me in position to receive directions from the Lord concerning how to establish my business, what partnerships I should pursue, and who to stay away from in business.  As a result, I have made thousands and thousand of dollars by following these prophetic words. I only sowed in money a fraction of what I have received in revelation from those prophetic words. So to say that my meager $30 seed (or whatever the prophet is asking for) is payment for the revelation received from a prophetic word is ludicrous!
How could I afford to pay for the deliverance I received from a prophecy?
A few years ago I had become really depressed. I had come to recognize that I had spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on a Ph.D. in higher education, yet I was unable to acquire a job working at a college or university. Although I knew the Lord had sent me to get my Ph.D., I was beginning to question the reason for why I needed to get a Ph.D. Around this same time I sowed into a prophet’s ministry – not so much to specifically receive a word about this issue – but rather to be encouraged.
In this prophetic word, the prophet began to explain my calling and that one day I would be ministering to those in high political authority. This prophetic word broke off years of depression because God explained to me that it was paramount that I obtained a Ph.D. so that I would be listened to by these political leaders. The prophetic word said that all of my educational experiences were setting me up with an academic pedigree that would allow me entrance into places of high authority. When I heard this prophetic word, the depression of feeling like a failure broke off of me immediately. This word brought clarity to my calling and caused me to feel as though the money I spent to receive a Ph.D. had a divine purpose. However, the money that I sowed into this prophet’s ministry was minuscule to what I received from the personal prophecy. Two years of depression and feeling like a failure was instantly lifted from off of me by one prophetic word that financially only cost me $30. There is no way I could ever pay God back what I received in mental and emotional healing from that prophetic word. You see, you couldn’t pay God for a prophecy if you wanted to. Who could afford it? I definitely could not. And neither could you.
A commonly misunderstood scripture: “Freely have you received. Freely you give.”
One scripture that the self-assigned prophecy police use is this one:
Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give(Matthew 10:8).
On my first day of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary my teacher taught us this: when interpreting scripture, never lift a scripture out of its context to make an argument. Rather look at that scripture and study the scriptures that proceed and follow the scripture for an accurate interpretation. So let’s look at this scripture again including the scriptures before and after Matthew 10:8.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. 9“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts- 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.  11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting. 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town (Matthew 10:7-15).
In this passage, Jesus was sending the disciples out to minister. His commission to them was to preach the Gospel of the Kingdom while they demonstrated the kingdom. The disciples were indued with power from the Holy Spirit to heal the sick, cleanse leapers, raise the dead and cast out demons. How many churches these days even believe in praying for the sick, cleansing leapers (people who have AIDS), or raising the dead? And don’t even mention casting out demons! Most churches don’t even believe people can be demonized.
So where do people go to experience healing, deliverance, or prophetic revelation? I submit to you that many people are seeking outreach ministries, online ministries, and going to conferences to receive deliverance, healing, and to receive prophetic words. When writers and bloggers belittle prophets who administer personal prophecy via the internet by condescendingly referring to these prophets as “internet prophets” they are intentional being derogatory and insulting – as if to discredit God’s prophets. As you can see from Matthew 10:7-15, the disciples were sent out into the marketplace -not the synagogue or the temple (modern day church). The one time Jesus tried to preach in the synagogue the religious leaders got so mad they ran him out of town and tried to push him off a cliff (ref. Luke 4). Anything that is cutting edge is usually accepted outside of the church first and then it becomes mainstream acceptable. Personal prophecy has primarily happened outside of the church because the church has been uncomfortable with prophecy. But as we can see from Matthew 10, just because something spiritual happens outside the walls of the church does not mean that it’s any less anointed or accepted by God.
Interestingly, when you study the book of Acts, out of the 20 miracles that were performed, only two occurred in the church. The other 18 miracles occurred through spiritual experiences that the Apostles and Philip the Evangelist had in the marketplace. The internet is our modern day marketplace. Just like in the book of Acts,  or when Jesus sent the disciples out in the Gospels, ministers made contact with people and then ministered to them by the power of God. These spiritual experiences – whether in deliverances, healing and miracles, or prophecy happened in the marketplace – not the church. Administering a prophetic word to someone via the internet is nothing new to God. Internet ministry is God’s marketplace. God has been sending His disciples out into the marketplace for over 2,000 years to minister to His people. In Biblical times it was door-to-door. In comparison, in present-day society, most people are scared to let people into their houses physically. However they do trust letting people come into their house via the internet. The internet is God’s new method of ministering house-to-house.
“Freely you have received, freely you give” in context.
When you read Matthew 10 in its proper context you see that when Jesus said “Freely you have received, freely you give” He was admonishing the disciples to not bring a backup stash of money with them when they went out to minister, but to totally trust in God for their provision. Jesus in turn promised the disciples that if they did trust God for their substance, He would command the people to take care of their needs. Jesus said, “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts-no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave.” Jesus was telling the disciples that they would freely receive from the people, therefore they would not have to worry about giving their all in ministry because  He would make sure that they were not left empty handed. The people were expected to financially take care of the disciples.
It is very important that we understand what Jesus said about taking care of His prophets because it is still applicable today. When Jesus said “Freely you have received, freely you give.” He was saying to the disciples: “Wherever you go in the marketplace, you will not have to worry about money. You don’t need your own resources because the people have been mandated to take care of you.” Furthermore, Jesus told the disciples, “You are not responsible for taking care of yourself. I have mandated the people to take care of you.” We know that this is the context by which Jesus said “Freely you have received, freely you give” because in Matthew 8:14-15 He states, ” If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet. Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town” (emphasis mine).
When a prophet is not worried about how she or he is going to pay their bills or provide for their family, they are in a position where they can spend quality time with God and hear on behalf of His people. So when a prophet freely receives from God’s people, then she or he is freed up spiritually to give an accurate anointed word from God. The church has gotten this scripture twisted and thought that it meant because prophets receive the anointing of God for free (There has been nothing free about being a Prophet. Accepting God’s call has cost me everything), they should administer prophetic words for free. As you can see from Matthew 10, this could be further from the truth. In this scripture, Jesus was saying that the people of God should financially support His prophets (give) and in-turn, His people can expect to receive an anointed word from His prophets. The prophet is not burdened down with concerns about expenses therefore she or he can hear (receive) an accurate word from God.
Think about it: out of the five-fold ministers, all the other offices: Apostle (Missionary), Pastor/Teacher (Church), and Evangelist (Itinerate-Church) have a system in place by which they can be supported. The Prophet is the only five-fold ministry gift that does not have an infrastructure in place where they can be supported full-time through a financial giving system. Like priest in the old testament, the prophet has to be supported by the people. In the past, many prophets were financially supported through traveling from church to church. But these days this is not even a sure method by which prophets can survive financially. During the last recession, because churches were losing money, they stopped bringing prophets to their churches. Many of my prophet friends were scrapping pennies to make ends meet. I have two prophet friends who, during the last recession, had to go on welfare!  You cannot tell me that this was God’s will to have His holy prophets on welfare?! God forbid! So when these self proclaimed prophecy police look down their noses at God’s Holy Prophets for ask for a donation in exchange for a prophetic word they are wrong. These self-proclaimed prophecy police should be ashamed of themselves! You can best believe these people will have to give an account for their stout words against God’s “internet prophets” as they facetiously call them.
In conclusion, we cannot make the assumption that Prophets are free to prophesy in the local church when 90% of church leadership does not even believe in prophets. And of the 10% that do, many of the pastors who provide the leadership for these local churches do not allow prophets to minister in their churches on a regular basis. House prophets in most local churches are usually regulated to prophesying only during praise and worship and during ministry ordinations. Are these the only reasons Jesus set prophets and personal prophecy in the Body of Christ – to be regulated to corporate words during worship and ordinations? Of course not! To the self-annoited prophecy police of Christian media – NEWSFLASH! The internet was not designed by Satan. The internet was designed by God to send His word out to whoever has the ears to ear what The Spirit is saying to the church.
 

Pressure: Satan’s tactic to get you out of the will of God

At the beginning of the month of September, as I would respond to people’s request for personal prophecies, I began to notice that several of the prophetic words I was sending dealt with the theme of pressure. In many of these messages the Holy Spirit was admonishing people to not allow the enemy to put pressure on them to make decisions that they would later regret. Initially, I was concerned when I began to receive these words. I thought, “Maybe I’m in a rut? Is this the reason why I’m getting all of these words that are similar?” But after some consultation with the Lord – He clarified to me that the issue of pressure was in fact a tactic the enemy was using during this season to get God’s people out of alignment.

How this connects with the word God gave me in November 2014

Towards the end of 2014, the Lord gave me a word to share. He said that 2015 would be “the year of the harvest” and that the majority of the Body of Christ would begin to experience the fullness of this harvest between September and October of 2015. The Lord has later said to me that this blessing will continue through March of 2016. Yet, because our advisory cannot stop God’s blessing for us, He will try to pressure us into making decisions that will delay God’s best for us.

He will speak against the Most High and oppress his holy people and try to change the set times and the laws. The holy people will be delivered into his hands for a time, times and half a time (Daniel 7:25, emphasis mine).

The enemy wants to put so much pressure on you that you make a bad decision that causes a setback. In scripture we see an example of how Satan pressured God’s people in the life of King David. David felt so much pressure from Satan that it caused him to conduct a census of Israel.

     Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He moved David against
     them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah. So the king said to Joab the commander
     of the army who was with him, “Now go throughout all the tribes of Israel, from
     Dan to Beersheba, and count the people, that I may know the number of the people”
(I Samuel 24:1-2).

Why would God get angry because David conducted a census?

It’s very important to understand why God was angry with David and Israel. Throughout history, God always demonstrated His grace towards Israel by showing up big when they went to battle. In fact, in the story of Gideon, Gideon started out with an
army of 32,000 and God told him to reduce the army to 300! Just think about that!!!!! Gideon’s army went from 32,000 to 300!!!! (Ref. Judges 7:1-7). This is an extremely important concept that you must understand: GOD + YOU = THE MAJORITY. God often thrives in situations that we consider to be pressure filled. The reason why is that, in these pressure filled situations, we are forced to put total trust in God.

So now you see why God considered it to be “evil” that David numbered his army. In essence, by numbering his army, David was saying that he trusted in his men more than he did in the power of God. The parallel passage in I Chronicle 20 says
this:

     “Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved
     David to number Israel. So David said to Joab and to
     the princes of the people, ‘Go, number Israel from
     Beersheba even to Dan, and bring me word that I may
     know their number'”.

Satan pressured David to count his army by getting him in fear. Fear is probably the number one tactic of the enemy to pressure us into making bad decisions. We feel the pressure of a bill so we go to a cash advance place that charges us 330% interest (or more!). Or a young lady sleeps with a guy because he pressures her – saying she should do it if she really loves him. Or because the enemy pressures us with lack, we begin to question whether God really promised us He was going to fix it.

Beloved, we cannot allow the devil to pressure us. If God said it, we have to stand on His word, and watch His salvation. If God has spoken to you through His prophetic word, or through a scripture that He has made rhema to you, you cannot back down off of it just because you see situations that are opposite to what He has promised. Stand on God’s Word. GOD + YOU = THE MAJORITY

Recently, I was serving on a prophetic team and our leader had been directed by God to host a conference in another part of the country from where we lived. As we got closer to the date, the devil threw all types of obstacles at us to try and get us to question whether we made the right decision in having the conference at this location. Registrations were moving slow and the booking manager for our team was having conflicts with the host hotel. Finally, one day I asked, “God did tell us to have the conference here, correct?” Everyone on the team agreed by saying “yes”. I then asked, “So why are we concerned about whether the conference is going to be successful or not? If God promised told us this is where we are supposed to have the conference, why are we stressing?” Consequently, we moved forward and the conference was very successful both financially and spiritually.

See, we have to go on with God despite the pressure we feel. It is a common misconception that if God gives us a word, everything is going to be hunky-dory and we will experience nothing but sunshine, rainbows, candy and kool-aide. Forget it! God’s word will always be contested by the enemy. But the God news is that with God all things are possible. GOD +YOU = THE MAJORITY. Don’t stop believing the word of The Lord. Stand on His prophetic word with faith and know that you know- if He spoke it,
IT WILL COME TO PASS.

How to access my harvest in 2015.

2015: The Year of The Harvest

For those of you who have been reading my newsletters or listening to me on blogtalkradio, you know that 2015 is the year of the harvest. The Lord told me that if we would make a list of our most significant seeds and offer them up as a memorial to Him, He would allow us to experience a 100-fold-blessing on these seeds. An example of the 100-fold harvest can be found in Genesis 26:12-13.

Now Isaac sowed in that land and reaped in the same year a hundredfold.  And the LORD blessed him, and the man became rich, and continued to grow richer until he became very wealthy.

God wants you to receive retro-pay for everything that has been stolen from you (See Proverbs 6:31). As people have gotten a hold of this revelation of restoration, it has been exciting for me to hear the awesome testimonies. Here are some examples:

I planted a seed for 7 year restoration in November–this week I got a new car (with my current job and credit is impossible without God), and just received a call for an interview for a new job. Praise God! Thank you, Prophet.  Just wanted to share what God is doing. God bless you.

So how do I access my harvest?  

Some of you are reading this right now and wondering why you haven’t received a harvest on your years of sowing. Or, if you have received a harvest, it definitely hasn’t been a 100 fold harvest. In the parable of the sower, the Lord says something that should be understood when we sow into God’s work:
Listen! A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up.  Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants, so that they did not bear grain.  Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up, grew and produced a crop, some multiplying thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times.”  Then Jesus said, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.” Mark 4:3-9.

In this parable, Jesus gives us a key to how we can receive a harvest from the seeds we sow. We sow according to the measure that we hear the word of God! Jesus came from an eastern culture. In Jesus’ culture, as opposed to our modern culture, when someone acknowledged that they had heard something – it was more than just listening. Hearing actually means that you have listened to what has been said, you cognitively understand what you have heard, and that you have decided to act on what you have heard.  When Jesus says, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear” (Genesis 4:9) – He is actually saying that when you hear the word of the Lord – where prophetically or through His scripture – you should act on what you hear. Furthermore, to the degree that you act on this word, this will be the degree to which you receive a harvest (30, 60, 100 fold).  We don’t receive a harvest because we don’t expect one.

Wrong teaching about money

I have been taught a lot of things about money. Here are some of the most popular sayings I have heard:

  • “You should not give to get”.
  • “If God never gave you anything else, you should be happy.”
  • “You never know how the Lord will bless you.”

All of these sayings sound good don’t they? These saying make the flesh feel good because they provide an explanation for why we may not be experiencing harvest. Unfortunately, none of these sayings are biblical because they contradict Mark 4’s promise for harvest. Around a year ago, the Lord explained something to me that I will share with you. He said to me, “Many people do not receive from Me because they don’t expect Me to do anything. To the degree that people expect from Me, that is the degree to which they receive from Me.”  When the Lord explained this to me, I immediately thought about the 30, 60, and 100 fold harvest. I immediately connected this revelation with Mark 4:24-25:

Consider carefully what you hear, He continued. With the measure you use, it will be measured to you-and even more. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.


And then in Mark 4:20 says,

Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop-some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown. 

Jesus makes it pretty clear – to the measure that you apply the scripture, that is the measure you will receive the blessings.

So how can I access a harvest on the seeds that I have sown?

I am a firm believer that writing things down is a powerful way the angels of God begin to minister for us (see Habakkuk 2:2-3; Revelations 1:19; Jeremiah 30:2). Although it is a simple concept, writing things down literally starts the course of action for things to come to pass in our life.

To receive your harvest, follow these six steps:

Step 1:Pray to the Lord, and reflect on the most significant seeds that you have sown over the past season.

Step 2: Write those seeds down. Remember the seed does not have to be financial.

Step 3:Offer those seeds up as a memorial to God.

Step 4:Thank God for receiving your seeds.

Step 5:Thank God for your 100 fold harvest.

Step 6:Expect to receive your harvest!

In the scripture, Cornelius received a blessing on the seed he sowed. His giving was received as a memorial to God. Because Cornelius mixed his prayers with his giving, God remembered the seeds that he sowed and Cornelius was blessed. This is a very important concept. Many people pray for money (and that is okay), but the biblical way to receive money is to pray AND give money.

Cornelius stared at him in fear. “What is it, Lord?” he asked. The angel answered, “Your prayers and gifts to the poor have come up as a memorial offering before God

(Acts 10:4).

Finally, the scripture states that our experiences are based on our expectations (Proverbs 23:11).  Whatever you expect you will receive. If you expect negative things to happen to you, that is what you will receive. However if you expect good things to happened to you, good things will begin to come your way. Begin to expect the best! Begin to expect success! Begin to expect harvest and you will receive a harvest – 30, 60, or 100 fold!

5 Reasons why you are broke! (And how you can fix it).

Introduction

The Bible has a lot to say about money and prosperity. And although, in the last 20 years there has arguably been wrong motives of some teaching on money – prosperity is biblically supported. Some preachers and teachers have taught on money in order to manipulate people to give. These ministers have used scriptures — sometimes out of context – as a means of twisting people’s arms into raising big offerings. Because of these abuses, honest Bible teachers have shied away from teaching on prosperity – in fear of being accused of being a “money preacher”. Yet, we cannot throw away the baby with the bathwater. Just because there have been abuses by some preachers and teachers concerning prosperity does not mean we should stop preaching and teaching on Biblical prosperity.

Most people are not against Biblical Prosperity

Thanks to many pioneers in the faith who suffered resistance, ridicule, and opposition from religious scoffers as they made gallant efforts to teach Biblical prosperity — currently most people in the Body of Christ do not have a problem with Christians being financially comfortable (or dare I say, rich). Many would agree that when God trusts someone with prosperity, that person is in a fantastic position to help others. And why would God not want us to be able to comfortably provide for our families, live in nice houses, drive nice cars, and enjoy ourselves? However, many saved, born-again believers are living on barley getting by street. But why? If God has promised us that we will “eat the good of the land” (Isaiah 1:19) why are so many Christians broke? Although this is not an exhaustive list, I will share with you 5 reasons why some Christians are broke and how we can shift from poverty to prosperity.

Reason #1 – Christians who do not tithe are broke.

The Bible is pretty clear, if you do not tithe you will suffer financial setbacks. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing Me, the whole nation of you! Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in My house, and test Me now in this (Malachi 3:9-10, emphasis mine). I can already hear some of you saying, “Tithing was under the Old Testament law. We are no longer under the law.” Well there are two problems with this argument: 1. Tithing was established before the law. Abraham paid tithes to Melchizedek around 2,000 years before Moses enacted the law (Ref. Genesis  14:20). 2. Tithing is mentioned in the new testament also. Jesus said “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, but you bypass justice and the love of God. You ought to have done these (tithe) and not to have left the other undone (Matthew 23:22, emphasis mine). In this passage Jesus was reprimanding the Scribes and Pharisees because they were using tithes as a method for getting around taking care of the widows and orphans. Interestingly though, Jesus didn’t say stop tithing. He actually said when you tithe do not neglect your other responsibilities.  People will give you lots of excuses for why we are not required to tithe today. Tithing is really a heart issue though. The scriptures state that where a man’s or woman’s heart is, that is where there money is (Matthew 6:21). You can tell a lot about who and what people love by looking at there checkbook and their debit card statement. There are a lot of writings out now asking (and attempting to answer) the question of whether we are required to tithe today or not. I would argue that the question should not be “Do we have to tithe? But rather, “Where should we tithe”?  Our hearts should be in a place where we want to tithe. And if you feel as though you are obligated to tithe out of force, you probably should not tithe until you can give with a heart of gratitude. Giving out of a heart of gratitude is the only way you will experience increase from your giving.

Reason #2 – Christians who have participated in the occult are broke. 

People who consult psychics receive a curse of poverty.  Isaiah 8:19-21 says: When they say to you, ‘Consult the mediums and the spiritist (psychics) who whisper and mutter,’ should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn. They will pass through the land hard-pressed and famished, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will be enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward. This scripture clearly states that people who consult psychics and mediums (consulting the dead) suffer poverty and lack.  If you have ever been to a psychic or consulted mediums, palm and/or tarot card readers, or played with Ouija boards you are under a curse with includes poverty. You should have someone who is skilled in deliverance to lead you through cleansing prayers so that you can be set free.

Reason #3 – Christians who are lazy are broke.

The scriptures admonish us as believers to be diligent in everything that we do. The scriptures also promise us that if we are lazy we will suffer poverty. Here are some scriptures from Proverbs that warn us about being lazy:

  • Proverbs 20:4 The sluggard does not plow after the autumn, So he begs during the harvest and has nothing.
  • Proverbs 10:4 Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.
  • Proverbs 13:4 The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
  • Proverbs 6:9-11 How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? “A little sleep, a little slumber, A little folding of the hands to rest”– Your poverty will come in like a vagabond And your need like an armed man.
  • Proverbs 18:9 He also who is slack in his work Is brother to him who destroys.

And in the New Testament it says this:  For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either. (Thessalonians 3:10). Remember this as well, procrastination is a first cousin to laziness because it puts off today what should be done today until tomorrow. When God gives us directions to do something we should be immediately obedient to what He says.

Reason #4 – Christians who are disobedient are broke. 

In Deuteronomy 28 God gives us a promises of wealth and prosperity when we do what He asks us to do. But when we disobey His commands, the scriptures promise use that we will be cursed and live a life of poverty. If you fully obey the LORD your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations on earth (Deuteronomy 28:1).  Isaiah 1:19 states If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land. God has promised us blessings and prosperity when we are faithful to do what He has told us. However, we can expect poverty, lack, and insufficiency when we disobey Him.

Reason #5 – Christians who walk in unforgiveness are broke 

Unforgiveness is probably the most common transgression that people commit. Primarily because not forgiving someone feels good to our flesh. When we do not forgive people in our flesh we feel vindicated because that(those) person(s) hurt us. Not forgiving that(those) person(s) makes us feel that we are getting back at that person. What’s so deceptive about unforgiveness is this – not forgiving somebody does not hurt the other person. Usually the person that hurt you has no knowledge that they hurt you. And if they do, most of the time they do not care. Holding on to unforgiveness only hurts you because God says if you do not forgive the person who offended you, He is going to judge YOU – not the other person. When Jesus asked his disciples, “How many times should you forgive somebody?” Peter replied “7 times!” Peter thought he had really said something profound. However Jesus corrected him and said, “No. You forgive 70 x 7″(Ref. Matthew 18:22). In essence Jesus was saying that we need to forgive people unto infinity. Jesus then gave a warning about people who refused to forgive people. He said that those who refuse to forgive others will be delivered to the tormentors (Ref. Matthew 18:24). This word tormentors may also include demonization. In 15 years of facilitating  deliverances, I have seen many, many cases of people who were tormented by demons because they refused to forgive someone.  In this scripture, Jesus is very clear on this issue: People who walk in unforgiveness will not be forgiven their debts. And his lord, moved with anger, handed him over to the torturers until he should repay all that was owed him (Matthew 18:34).  God is saying here that He will allow us to remain in debt until we forgive. Have you been praying for supernatural debt cancellation? According to the scriptures, it won’t happen until you remove all unforgiveness.

Conclusion

These 5 reasons for why Christians are broke is by no means exhaustive.  If you have been an offender of one, some, or all of these reasons, repent. Repentance is not just saying you are sorry, but making a conscientious decision to do better.  So if you were moving down and you are supposed to be going up, you move in the opposite direction. Or if God has told you to go East, and you are moving West, you turn around and go East.

God says in His word that He wants to prosper you:

But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today. (Deut. 8:18). When we are prosperous, we demonstrate to the world that God is real. When we are wealthy we establish God’s covenant (promise) in the earth. God has promised us that He wants to us to produce wealth. So be it!

Why you shouldn’t go to a psychic.

I had fell asleep on the coach with the television on. When I woke up there was a commercial advertising psychics. I thought to myself – “Wow! I haven’t seen  a psychic commercial in a long time.” About 30 minutes later I saw the same psychic commercial running again. I realized then that the psychic networks of the 80s and 90s are back. And what is wrong with that? What’s wrong with having someone “give you a reading”? What’s so wrong with going to a psychic? Well, there is a lot wrong with going to a psychic. In over 15 years of ministry, I have dealt with some of the most diabolical demonization from people who have gone to psychics. Here are 3 significant problems with consulting a psychic.

1. Going to a psychic causes you to come under a curse.

You are wearied with your many counsels; Let now the astrologers, Those who prophesy by the stars, Those who predict by the new moons, Stand up and save you from what will come upon you.Behold, they have become like stubble, Fire burns them; They cannot deliver themselves from the power of the flame; There will be no coal to warm by Nor a fire to sit before! Isaiah 47:13-14.  This scripture is pretty clear, when someone goes to a psychic they suffer destruction. Because God admonishes us to seek Him concerning our future, when we consult a psychic, what we are saying is we do not believe that God holds our future so we must go to someone else. Real psychics actually seek familiar spirits. Familiar spirits are demonic spirits that have followed you and your family and know things about you. But they only know what they see. They do not know eternal things about you.

2. Going to a psychic cause poverty.

3. Going to a psychic is an abomination to God

When thou art come into the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.  There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee. Deuteronomy 18:9-13. God hates when people consult psychics or practice psychic activities.

There is another way

There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to know what your future holds. God says that when we are filled with His Holy Spirit we will “know all things.” I John 2:27. Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit will reveal to us what we should know about ourselves.  But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you, John 16:13-14. God wants you to know what will happen in your future. He just wants you consult Him to find out about what is going to happen.

God also uses prophets to share people’s future

In contrast to psychics, prophets are God’s holy spokespeople who are anointed by the Holy Spirit to speak into people’s lives and share with them what is to come. God’s prophets prophesy under the unction of the Spirit of God. But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation (I Corinthians 14:3).
